Clean and Clear: Proper Contact Lens Hygiene
Step 1: Wash Your Hands | Start by thoroughly washing your hands with soap and water. Make sure to rinse off any soap residue and dry your hands with a lint-free towel. Clean hands are crucial to prevent dirt and bacteria from transferring to your lenses.
Step 2: Remove Your Contacts | Before handling your contact lenses, ensure that your hands are completely dry. Gently pinch the lens between your thumb and forefinger to remove it from your eye. Be careful not to squeeze too hard, as this can damage the lens.
Step 3: Clean Your Lenses | Place the contact lens in the palm of your hand and add a few drops of a recommended multipurpose contact lens solution. Gently rub the lens with your fingertip in a back-and-forth motion for about 20 seconds. This helps remove protein deposits and other debris.
Step 4: Rinse and Soak | After cleaning, rinse the lens thoroughly with fresh solution to remove any remaining debris. Fill your contact lens case with fresh solution and place the lens in the case. Allow it to soak for the recommended time, usually overnight.
Step 5: Replace the Solution | Never reuse the solution in your contact lens case. Empty the old solution and rinse the case with fresh solution. Air dry the case with the lids off during the day to prevent bacterial growth.
Step 6: Insert the Lens | Before wearing your lenses again, ensure they are properly hydrated in fresh solution. Place the lens on the tip of your finger, and with your other hand, use your index finger to hold your upper eyelid and your middle finger to hold your lower eyelid. Gently place the lens on your eye, looking straight ahead.
Step 7: Blink and Assess | Blink several times to ensure the lens is comfortable and properly positioned on your eye. If you experience any discomfort or blurry vision, remove the lens and inspect it for debris or damage.
